Michal3d Spillmodeler - My WIP's

Legg innav michal3d » man 03 jan, 2011

Hei,

I will post here my 3D models for games. I would like to hear opinions especially from peoples who work as game modeler and such. Feel free to share with me your any notice.

Firstly, my model which I've showed in general Work in Progress, now is here:

What do you think about polycount and the other things? :) Einar said: "smart polycount". So, I'm waiting for more opinions :D

I made a quick illustration of which edge loops I would remove:

Since the elements are separate, these probably aren't necessary.
Other than this, nice work! I look forward to seeing it texturised. :)

you can cut even more than that as well, if edges don't add anything to the silhouette they aren't needed :)

Thanks Jorgen & pampers!

I definitely created too much edge loops, you and another person explained me it in similar way. I've made new version but I cut too much edges, so I'm gonna recreate it.

By the way, there's my new model, based on 3DMotive oil tank but a little bit different in proportions.

thats much better :) since those cylinders are so small you can easily remove some edges on them and the two extruded loops around the main tank can might as well be normalmapped if you want to look into that

Thanks again pampers,

Normalmapping sounds quite mysterious for me, but of course I heard about it but never tried so far  Since I have been texturing, I'm just uvw mapping and applying texture without normal maps. That it's time to improve skills.

According to your tips, I removed tons of edges:

Remember to only have quads or tris. All quads will be converted into tris for games anyway. I see some issues. Like the table, is that one separate plane or is the whole table top geometry? The same with the top of your sign.

Also on the tank, on the side with the tap, at top and bottom you have some faces that should me made into quads and tris. The tank, is that going to be a big asset or small? If it's small you can save a lot of polys on the pipes. You can also soften the normals on those items so that they appear to be smoother than they are. This you can do in your 3D-app or in most game engines.

Cool models =) You should really look into normal maps. Especially if you want to work with games!

Hi!

Cool models. I agree with whait saitham are saying.

Even though you have removed some edges in the front of your sign, what you really have done is hiding them likw with the optimize modifier in max.

If you take a look at some of the Next gen small scene Contest submission you will se that everything in game is triangulated and therefore you can weld many edges to corners and stuff, but still keep the proportions of your model.

@Saitham: That's whole table top geometry, I removed egdes but now I'm fixing my fault. Tank is goint to be big asset, bigger than player character. I'm also going to make a texture for stall and slowly improve it to hopefully good lookin' textured model :) Thanks for the links too.

@krth8: I'm working on it, I have been adding details, filling empty space next to stall and putting something on it.

I'm glad to hear kind words about my models =)
